Collection: Red Blood Cells

Red blood cells, also known as erythrocytes, are the most common type of blood cells and are responsible for delivery oxygen to our tissues. They make up around 70% of an adult human's cells. A red blood cell is around 7 microns in size, with each cubic millimetre of blood containing 4-6 million cells!

Healthy red blood cells have an instantly recognisable appearance due to their characteristic bi-concave disc shape. Red blood cells are also flexible and can form a bell shape to allow them to pass through extremely small blood vessels.

Red blood cells have no nucleus, so cannot create proteins or divide but each red blood cell can hold approximately 270 million haemoglobin molecules, the iron-containing molecule that binds oxygen and carbon dioxide. Each red blood cell will remain for around 100 days, making a full circuit of the body every 60 seconds before it is broken down.
